
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have become standard equipment on virtually every new vehicle sold in the United States. From forward collision warning to lane departure alerts, these technologies rely on precisely calibrated cameras, radar, and sensor arrays to function correctly. When calibration is off by even a small margin, the system may fail to detect hazards accurately — putting drivers and others at risk.
What Is ADAS?
ADAS is a collective term for electronic safety systems that assist the driver. Common ADAS features include Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA). Each system depends on one or more sensors that must be aligned to precise OEM specifications.
Why Calibration Matters
Every time a windshield is replaced, a bumper is repaired, wheel alignment is adjusted, or suspension components are changed, ADAS sensors can shift out of specification. A camera that is off by just one degree can cause the LDW system to miss lane markings entirely or trigger false warnings. Proper recalibration using certified target boards restores the system to factory accuracy.
Static vs. Dynamic Calibration
There are two main calibration methods. Static calibration is performed in a controlled shop environment using target boards placed at precise distances and angles from the vehicle. Dynamic calibration requires driving the vehicle at specific speeds on marked roads. Many OEMs require a combination of both.
